Join WSCC’s HumanKind series for an insightful educational talk led by Kat Hutton from MiGen, a Michigan-based network for LGBTQ+ elders on Thurs., Nov. 21 at 7:00 p.m. at the Mason County District Library in Ludington. The event will focus on the critical issue of social isolation and loneliness among LGBTQ+ older adults. Attendees will gain an understanding of the unique challenges faced by this community, including barriers to social connection, and explore practical solutions and interventions to foster meaningful relationships.
This discussion is part of HumanKind’s 2024 theme, “Overcoming Loneliness: Togetherness, Connection, Community,” which aims to understand and address the profound impact of loneliness.
“Loneliness can be amplified in LGBTQ+ elders,” says Dr. John Moore, WSCC associate professor of psychology. “They are frequently discriminated against in terms of housing and access to care facilities, and there are issues of acceptance in community support organizations. Community members and those that work with elderly populations would benefit greatly from this event.”
