West Shore Community College’s HumanKind series invites the community to a special panel discussion on Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro. The event will take place on Apr. 10 at 2:00 p.m. in the William M. Anderson Library on WSCC’s main campus. This free event is open to all.
As the culmination of WSCC’s common read initiative, the panel will explore the themes and conclusions of Klara and the Sun. Throughout the semester, students have engaged with the book in their coursework, and Professor of Mathematics Wade James and Director of Library Services Patti Skinner have co-hosted a podcast series featuring in-depth discussions with various guests. The upcoming panel discussion will also serve as the final episode of this semester’s podcast series, available on the West Shore Community College YouTube channel. The live panel will feature a diverse group of voices, with Wade James and Patti Skinner moderating. They will be joined by Professor of History and Political Science Mike Nagle, Academic Coach Lorynn Hackert, and students Grace Ashley and Jesse Blanchard.
“The common read allows us to engage in meaningful conversations across disciplines,” said Skinner. “Klara and the Sun prompts discussions on loneliness and artificial intelligence—two of today’s most pressing topics. By sharing this conversation through both the podcast and this live panel, we can explore these themes more fully. The HumanKind series is dedicated to examining what it means to be human, and this discussion furthers that mission.”
HumanKind is WSCC’s arts and culture lecture series, offering a wide range of programming, including presentations, workshops, film screenings, art exhibitions, and performing arts events.
