The West Shore Community College theater department will present “Fun Home” debuting Thursday, Feb. 29 with a final performance on Sunday, March. 10.  Evening performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. Thurs. through Saturday, and matinees at 2:00 p.m. on both Mar. 3, and Mar. 10.

A winning production of five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book, “Fun Home” is a theater adaptation of Alison Bechdel’s 2006 graphic memoir.  A coming of age story focused on gender identity and the way that identity differs from societal expectations. The production is directed by Michelle Kiessel and all shows will take place at Center State Theater.

“While the subject matter is intense at times, one of the things that makes this musical, in my opinion, a masterpiece is that there is not one extra note, word, or scene that is not absolutely necessary in telling the story. We truly see the essence of Alison Bechdel’s experience growing up in a small, Pennsylvania town with a population of 700, with a complicated family. The production also highlights the truly joyous moments of her childhood and young adulthood. Like life, it is bittersweet, but ultimately hopeful” said Kiessel.

The show has a run time of 95 minutes and is recommended for ages 15 and up.  For more information and to purchase tickets, visit the college’s website at www.westshore.edu/performingarts.
