West Shore Community College (WSCC) is proud to announce its selection as one of only six community college teams in Michigan to receive funding through the Reconnect Mathematics Project (RMP), a statewide initiative led by Kellogg Community College in collaboration with the Michigan Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges. The project is funded by the National Science Foundation.
WSCC’s mathematics department was awarded $25,000 to support an innovative effort to improve student learning and engagement in math education. The grant will support a local project titled “Increasing Engagement in the HyFlex Modality,” focused on transforming the delivery of college Algebra. The HyFlex format allows students to attend class in person, online, or switch between the two as needed. With this grant, the WSCC team aims to make the HyFlex experience more interactive, personalized, and effective for students.
“This project is about reimagining how we teach Algebra so that it works better for students—no matter how they attend class,” said Professor of Mathematics Dr. Adam Moreno. “We’re moving away from lecture-heavy formats and toward an inquiry-based model that emphasizes discovery and hands-on learning.”
The core project team includes Dr. Moreno as well as Professor of Mathematics Wade James, with adjunct professor Stephanie Shilander contributing through student coaching, feedback, and leading focus groups.
The team has also committed to sharing their work with the broader academic community, presenting their findings at upcoming national conferences in 2026 or 2027.
