Rachel Henderson

Success Coach for the Manistee Commitment Scholarship Program (MCSP)

rhenderson@westshore.edu | (231) 843-5847

About Rachel

I have been serving in this role since March 2022 and have enjoyed working with many scholars from Manistee County, seeing them to and through their postsecondary education at WSCC.

The Manistee Commitment Scholarship Program is a program of the Manistee County Community Foundation (MCCF) operated in collaboration with West Shore Community College (WSCC).  The overarching goal of the program is to increase access and support for Manistee County students who wish to pursue postsecondary education and earn a college degree.  The students in the MCSP have demonstrated financial need and are first-generation college-going students.  Scholars who meet program expectations have an opportunity to be considered for a tuition and fees scholarship award to WSCC.

My success coaching includes supporting scholars while in high school to create their postsecondary plans and in college to meet their academic goals towards graduation, certificate completion, and/or preparedness to transfer to another institution.  I organize programming to support scholars along their high school and postsecondary academic journeys.  I also assist scholars in completing the FAFSA and accessing financial aid.

This position is made possible in part by a grant from the Manistee County Community Foundation – Manistee Commitment Scholarship Program Fund.

tfournier2@westshore.edu | (231) 769-0961

About Talea

Talea Fournier is an AmeriCorps member for the College Completion Corps program with the Michigan College Access Network. As a Completion Coach, Talea serves as a resource to boost college success by increasing completion rates for post-secondary certificates or associate degrees, particularly for low-income and first-generation students. Talea’s cohort is made up of 170 students, the vast majority being Mason County Promise Scholars. While not all Promise Zone students are in her cohort, Talea is a go-to resource for Promise-related assistance and is happy to work with any student with questions about the Promise scholarship.

How does the MCAN Completion Coach role work? The Completion Coach fulfills a service term at West Shore ranging from 6 months to a year. A coach may choose to renew their position for another term of service, but coaches may only serve up to a total of 2 years. The make-up of each cohort may change from term to term based on the college’s needs. If you have any questions or recommendations, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Talea at tfournier2@westshore.edu or (231) 769-0961.
