(Outlined system for dividing and selling public lands)
All public land was to be surveyed and divided
into Townships 36 miles square.
Each Township was divided into 36 sections;
each was 1 mile square (or 640 acres).
Land was to be sold at auction for no less than
$1.00 per acre.
Money obtained from sale of land from one section
of a Township was reserved
for public schools.
