MAMMA MIA Opens!

The international smash hit “Mamma Mia!” opens for the next three weekends in West Shore Community College’s Center Stage Theater. Performances will run February 21, 22, 28, 29, March 6 and 7 at 7:30 p.m. and February 23, March 1 and 8, at 2 p.m. The musical is part of WSCC’s Performing Arts Series.
This jukebox musical is based on the award-winning catalog of songs by the Swedish pop music group ABBA, one of the most popular international groups of all time and the title of the musical is taken from ABBA’s 1975 chart-topper, “Mamma Mia.” Over 65 million people have seen the show since its 1999 debut. A film adaptation was released in July 2008.
The story is set on a Grecian island in the Aegean Sea. The heart-warming plot follows a young bride on the eve of her wedding and the search for her father, which begins when she brings three men from her mother’s past back to the island after a period of 20 years. The timeless music paired with energetic dance numbers and a touching story makes “Mamma Mia!” the ultimate feel-good show.
Each performance features familiar songs such as “Super Trouper,” “Lay All Your Love on Me,” “Dancing Queen,” “Knowing Me, Knowing You,” “Take a Chance on Me,” “Thank You for the Music,” “Money, Money, Money,” “The Winner Takes It All,” “Voulez-Vous,” “SOS,” and the title track.
The musical is directed by Michelle Kiessel, with music direction by Jaime Petrie, and features choreography by Lauren Sawson and AJ Guertin. The vocal coach is David Moul. The Center Stage Theater production company of over 50 people includes 18 actors, nine orchestra members, and a production crew of 24.
“The music of ABBA is timeless and people from all generations will recognize the classic tunes while identifying with the themes of family and friendship and its uplifting message,” said Kiessel.
