West Shore Community College is pleased to announce a thought-provoking presentation by award-winning author Timothy Egan on his latest book, A Fever in the Heartland: The Ku Klux Klan’s Plot to Take Over America, and the Woman Who Stopped Them. The discussion, part of the WSCC Humankind 2024 series “Overcoming Loneliness: Togetherness, Connection, Community,”, will explore how isolation and loneliness can lead individuals to embrace extremist ideologies. Egan, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and National Book Award recipient, is renowned for his works on pivotal moments in American history. His book A Fever in the Heartland delves into the Klan’s rise to power in Indiana during the 1920s under the leadership of D.C. Stephenson. By chronicling the Klan’s exploitation of social isolation and fear, Egan reveals how individuals seeking belonging were drawn into the Klan’s dangerous rhetoric and actions. His discussion will shed light on how themes of loneliness and radicalization continue to resonate in today’s world, encouraging deeper conversations about community, inclusion, and resilience.
