On Oct. 11, at 12:30 p.m., West Shore Community College’s Humankind series invites the public to attend no-cost livestreamed watch parties featuring Angeline Boulley, author of Firekeeper’s Daughter, this year’s Great Michigan Read selection. During this event, Boulley will discuss and read from her novel. Watch party events will be at the following locations:

- Ludington Area Center for the Arts, 107 S Harrison St, Ludington,
- Hart Area Public Library, 415 S State St, Hart

Both the watch parties and the podcast are part of WSCC’s Humankind series, “Inclusion: Conversations Around a Crowded Table,” considering the ways different cultural voices speak around the crowded table of our multicultural nation. Boulley’s novel takes place in the Ojibwe community of Sault Ste. Marie. The main character is a young woman who is developing a sense of her own identity while dealing with the real time crisis of drug manufacture and associated violence in her community.
The college has adopted the novel as a “common read” and it is being read by both college students and by area high school students at Brethren, Pentwater, Hart, and Mason County Eastern. “This novel is richly textured, powerful, and timely,” says WSCC’s Professor of English and Education, Seán Henne. “It matters that communities across Michigan consider the issues Boulley raises, and that we take this opportunity to learn about such a vital and vibrant Michigan culture.”
Boulley is a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians and a former Director of the Office of Indian Education at the U.S. Department of Education. Firekeeper’s Daughter is her debut novel and has been a #1 New York Times bestseller.
The Humankind series is West Shore Community College’s arts and culture lecture series. The series consists of lectures, presentations, workshops, art exhibitions, film series, and much more.
