Dr. El-Sayed will be speaking on the topic of racial justice and equality in America today.
The event will be moderated by Senate Secretary Sam Gillette and a link for the event will be made available via WSCC’s Student Organizations and Activities Program Facebook page.
“We are so honored to have Dr. El-Sayed joining us to address this important topic,” said Gillette. “Our nation is divided and it’s past time that we have these discussions starting on the local level.”
Dr. El-Sayed was a Democratic candidate for Governor in Michigan in 2018. He finished second in the Democratic primary behind Gretchen Whitmer.
Prior to running for Governor, Dr. El-Sayed was executive director of the Detroit Health Department and Health Officer for the City of Detroit. He was also formerly a professor in the Department of Epidemiology at Columbia University.
Dr. El-Sayed is a current political contributor for CNN and the host of the politics and public health podcast “American Dissected.” He is the author of Healing Politics: A Doctor’s Journey into the Heart of Our Political Epidemic among other publications. In 2020, he served on the unity task force of Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders for the topic of health care.
Dr. El-Sayed holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan and a Masters and PhD from Oriel College in Oxford, England. He earned his MD from Columbia University.
