Surgical Technologist is an online employer-sponsored apprenticeship program. You must be referred by your employer to apply to this program. Surgical Technologists work in the operating room and assist the surgeon by preparing the operating room, passing surgical equipment, providing for patient safety and ensures cleanliness and sterility of the operating room and instruments.
Surgical Technologist Duties
- Maintain a proper sterile field during surgical procedures.
- Count sponges, needles, and instruments before and after operation.
- Scrub arms and hands and assist the surgical team to scrub and put on gloves, masks, and surgical clothing.
- Provide technical assistance to surgeons, surgical nurses, or anesthesiologists.
- Prepare patients for surgery, including positioning patients on the operating table and covering them with sterile surgical drapes to prevent exposure.
- Hand instruments and supplies to surgeons and surgeons’ assistants, hold retractors and cut sutures, and perform other tasks as directed by surgeon during operation.

Program Mission Statement And Goals
The mission and purpose of the Surgical Technology Program is to provide for
both the personal and professional career development of each Surgical Technology
student.
The general goals of the program are:
- Graduates will demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary for competency as
an entry-level Surgical Technologist. - Graduates will exhibit professional growth and development through the values,
attitudes, and behaviors necessary of an entry-level Surgical Technologist. - To prepare entry-level surgical technologists who are competent in the cognitive
(knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains to enter
the profession. - To prepare the graduate to communicate effectively and professionally
- Graduates will complete the program within the scheduled timeframe with the ability
to earn Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credentials to successfully work in the field
of Surgical Technology.
The Surgical Technology program prepares students to become entry-level
Surgical Technologists who are competent in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor
(skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains to enter the profession. The program
terminates in an award of an Associates of Applied Science degree in Surgical
Technology. The program has been developed to be consistent with standards and
requirements of the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), the Association of Surgical
Technologist, the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting, and the
Accreditation Review Committee of Surgical Technology
