Wherever there is a need for hands‐on personal care, certified Nursing Assistants (CNA), or nurse aides, are there. Nursing assistants are the caregivers who help patients of all ages perform the most essential basic activities of daily life, like bathing, toileting, dressing, and eating. CNAs work under the supervision of nurses, and since they have extensive daily contact with each patient, they play a key role in keeping nurses informed about patients’ needs.

- Provide personal care such as assisting with bathing, dressing, toileting, grooming, and other personal care needs.
- Measure and record vital signs.
- Assist with moving in and out of bed and transporting to and from different locations.
- Demonstrate proper safety techniques.
- Display professional communication by treating everyone with care, dignity, and respect.
- Maintain confidentiality of protected health information.
- Identify acute changes in resident condition and communicate changes to the healthcare team immediately.
- Provide for the safety of all patients, staff, and visitors.

Upon satisfactory completion of the course the student will be able to:
- Assist the nurse by accepting, understanding, and completing delegated tasks.
- Communicate and interact competently with residents and accurately document care given.
- Demonstrate sensitivity to resident’s emotional, social, cultural, mental, and physical needs through skillful directed interactions.
- Assist residents in attaining and maintaining functional independence.
- Exhibit behavior in support of resident’s rights, including HIPAA regulations. Demonstrate proper safety techniques, including abdominal thrusts for individuals who are choking.
- Understand the basic principles of infection control and the prevention of communicable diseases (TB, HBV, AIDS, COVID19).
- Prepare for the state CNA testing.
