Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
Become An EMT
The EMT program prepares students to take the National Registry EMT (NREMT) exam to become a licensed EMT. Individuals must be 18 years of age to be licensed as an EMT. Those under 18 may enroll in the program and take the exam, but will ineligible to apply for a license through the State of Michigan until their 18th birthday.
The EMT program begins with the EMR (Emergency Medical Responder) course. Students who pass this course will be eligible to take the National Registry for Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) Emergency Medical Responder written exam. WSCC offers a matriculation course for those who are currently licensed or have completed an EMR course within the last year.
Prior to the start of the program students must attend an EMS orientation, and obtain American Heart Association (AHA) Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
EMT Duties
- Administer first aid treatment or life support care to sick or injured persons in prehospital settings.
- Assess nature and extent of illness or injury to establish and prioritize medical procedures.
- Attend training classes to maintain certification licensure, keep abreast of new developments in the field, or maintain existing knowledge.
- Comfort and reassure patients.
- Communicate with dispatchers or treatment center personnel to provide information about situation, to arrange reception of survivors, or to receive instructions for further treatment.
- Coordinate work with other emergency medical team members or police or fire department personnel.

Are There Prerequisites To Apply?
Prior to the start of the program students must attend an EMS orientation, and obtain American Heart Association (AHA) Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Upon program acceptance students must complete the following prior to beginning coursework:
- Successfully pass a Criminal Background Check
- Successfully pass a Drug Screen test
- Provide Certification of Physical Fitness Form completed by a Physician
- Provide current immunization records, including negative TB results. Records must remain current for the duration of the program
- Provide current and vaid unrestricted State of Michigan Driver’s License
