Speaker Jamon Jordan on Black History in Northern Michigan

Jamon Jordan, who runs Black Scroll Network History and Tours in Detroit, will provide an online presentation about black history in northern Michigan on Thursday, March 25, at 7 p.m.

The presentation, a joint effort between West Shore Community College’s Student Senate and Engaging for Equity, will take place on Zoom and will also be archived for viewing following the livestream event.

From the Underground Railroad to Idlewild, African Americans have been coming to and living in northern Michigan for many years. Although the center of African American populations are in southeast and southwest Michigan, there have been important people, places, events, and contributions of African Americans in areas north of Lansing.

The presentation will show how the historic people and places of African Americans in northern Michigan are connected to African American communities and their history throughout Michigan and the rest of the country.

Jordan, whose expertise is in African and African-American history, was a social studies teacher for 20 years before launching the Black Scroll History Network and Tours, where he provides walking and bus tours of black history in Detroit.  Because of COVID-19, he has moved the tours online. 

This Engaging for Equity speaking engagement is a collaboration between the college, Mason County District Library, and the Manistee Area Racial Justice and Diversity Initiative that presents programming to encourage engagement, learning, and discussion about issues of equity.
