West Shore Community College (WSCC) will host a public forum on Mon., March 17, at 5:30 p.m. or 20 minutes after the conclusion of the Board of Trustees meeting if that passes 5:30 p.m. The forum will take place at Center Stage Theater in the Arts and Sciences building on WSCC’s main campus, located at 3000 N. Stiles Road.
The purpose of the forum is to provide the public with an opportunity to voice their opinions on recommendations put forth by WSCC administration following extensive work by the community-based Recreation Task Force. The Task Force has thoroughly assessed the college’s and the community’s recreational offerings and identified opportunities for enhancement.
- Renovate the Pool – The WSCC pool is an important community resource. Renovating the natatorium, with an estimated cost of $3.5 million, would address structural and operational deficiencies while ensuring continued availability for public use. If approved, the project would take approximately one year to complete after construction begins.
- Commit to Hiring an Aquatics Director – A dedicated Aquatics Director would oversee pool operations, develop new programming such as swim lessons and open swim opportunities, and foster partnerships to maximize utilization. Given the anticipated renovation timeline, this position would not be required until late 2026 to mid-2027.
- Explore the Construction of an Indoor Facility with Track and Turf – Community interest in an indoor track and turf facility is strong. While this is a long-term goal, beginning the feasibility and planning process will position WSCC to meet future regional needs. Inclusion in the next Facility Master Plan would be an appropriate next step.
These recommendations are contingent upon the successful renewal of the capital millage. WSCC invites all community members to participate in this important conversation regarding the future of recreation facilities at the college.
