A note about the exam:  there is no time limit for the exam.  You may take as much time as you want, but I would encourage you to "save" periodically as you take the test.   It also must be COMPLETED by 11:00 PM on the date it's due or it will not be available. 

Instructions for taking Exam #3:

  • The exam is divided into two parts, one of which is to be completed on Moodle.  The Multiple Choice section of the exam will consist of 20 questions from the text & power point lectures.  The multiple choice can be accessed by choosing Multiple Choice Segment of Exam #3.
  • The second section of the exam is essay.  You may choose any two questions below and answer them.  The answers must be sent to me as an e-mail attachment.  I MUST receive the e-mail by 11:00 PM on the date on which it is due.  As soon as I receive your e-mail with the essays, I will reply and let you know I've received it.  If you haven't received an e-mail reply, that probably means I didn't receive the message.  Please don't wait until the last minute to take the exam; try to leave yourself time in case of some sort of a problem.

Section II:  Essay

 

The following are the possible essay questions for the second mid-term.  Pick any two to answer.

  1. Describe & evaluate the US actions as it fought in World War Two.  How/why did the US enter the war as a combatant in the conflict?  What strategies were developed and implemented by the US, and its allies, to defeat Germany & Japan?  Overall, do you agree with the US decision to use an atomic bomb against Japan?  Why/why not?  (Hint:  if you choose to write on this question, make sure to include some of the arguments for and against the use of a nuclear weapon found on the hyperlink below & on the Moodle site).
  2. Write an essay describing the Home Front during the Second World War (hint:  focus on the impact of the war on the Government, the Society/Economy, and Race Relations).  Overall, were the changes which occurred in the United States during the war positive or negative for the country?  Explain.
  3. Describe and evaluate the major issues associated with American Foreign Policy during the early Cold War.  Why was there mutual mistrust between the Americans and Soviets in the years following World War Two?  What philosophies, and then policies, were implemented by the US Government?  How did crises develop in both Germany & Korea?  Overall, do you agree or disagree with the actions taken by the United States during this era?  Why/why not?
  4. Assume you are a teenager living in the US in 1961.  Write a letter to a teenager in the USSR describing life in the US since WWII.  (Hint:  The letter should focus on the Affluent Society, life for WWII Veterans, Family Life & Youth Culture, and the beginnings of the modern Civil Rights Movement).
