Section V:  Essay

 

The following are the possible essay questions for the second mid-term.  One will be chosen for you on your exam.

  1. A journalist recently made this comment:  "The decade of the 1920s was a "roaring" time for all in the nation.  Every segment of American society was characterized by tremendous economic prosperity as the nation left World War One behind.  There was tremendous unity among the American people as the great American "melting pot" was celebrated by all.  Politicians also were seen as heroes by the American people in this decade of "heroes" nationally."  Write an essay which describes life in the United States during this decade.  Overall, do you agree or disagree with the arguments put forth by this journalist?  Why/why not?
  2. Write an essay that describes and evaluates the New Deal and its impact on United States history.  Describe the major pieces of legislation that were part of the New Deal.  How did challengers impact Roosevelt’s ideas?  Overall, do you believe the New Deal and its legacy had a positive or negative impact on the history of the United States?  Explain.
  3. Write an essay describing the Home Front during the Second World War (hint:  focus on the impact of the war on the Government, the Society/Economy, and Race Relations).  Overall, were the changes which occurred in the United States during the war positive or negative for the country?  Explain.
  4. Pick any four of the five Civil Rights leaders below: M.L. King Jr., Malcolm X, Cesar Chavez, Dennis Banks/George Mitchell (they worked toward similar goals), and Betty Friedan.  Describe these individuals; who were they? Compare and contrast their activities during the Civil Rights Movement.  What were their goals?   What tactics did they use to achieve their goals?  Overall, whom do you believe to be the single most important leader?  Explain.
