ESSAY

One of the following questions will be chosen at random the day of the exam.

  1. Write an essay that describes and evaluates American participation in the Vietnam War during the Johnson and Nixon Administrations.  Why did the United States become involved in the war in Vietnam in the first place?  What events took place during the war while these two Presidents were in office?  What policies did Johnson & Nixon develop to fight the war?  Do you agree with Johnson’s & Nixon’s policies in Vietnam?  Why/why not?
  2. Describe and evaluate the “style” and domestic policies of John Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson in the 1960s.  How successful were they with the implementation of their ideas?  Overall, do you believe their liberal reform programs have had a positive or negative impact on the country?  Explain.
  3. Describe and evaluate the successes and failures of Richard Nixon's presidency (the essay should focus on his Domestic Policy, Foreign Policy and the Watergate Scandal).  Overall, was the legacy of his presidency positive or negative for the United States?  Explain.
