Possible essay questions for the first mid-term exam:  You may chose any two of the four questions below to answer.  It's your choice.


  1. Assume you are a member of the Iroquois Confederacy on the eve of European contact. Describe your life-style and culture. What was the Confederacy? How was it created? How does your life compare/contrast to Indians living along the Pacific Northwest Coast and in different parts of New England? (If you are uncomfortable "assuming an identity" you may simply answer the question by comparing and contrasting life for the Iroquois, New England Indians & Native Americans living in the Pacific Northwest.)
  2. Write an essay that compares & contrasts early exploration & settlement of North America undertaken by the Spanish, French, & English (up to the late 1600s).  Overall, which European nation's activities do you believe had the largest impact on the history of North America during this era?
  3. Write an essay that describes life in the English colonies of New England during the 17th Century.  The essay should focus on the following areas: What factors led colonists to move there?  What were some important events in the region's early settlement/history?  How were their interactions with Native Americans?  How did New Englanders deal with dissenters & witches?  Why did they deal so harshly with dissenters? 
  4. Compare & contrast the histories of the Middle Colonies & those of the Lower South from the mid 1600s to mid 1700s.  What events and individuals shaped the early histories of New York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina & Georgia?  Overall, why did slavery become so prevalent in the Lower South (particularly South Carolina) as compared to the Middle Colonies?
