Frequently Asked Questions

WHEN SHOULD I APPLY?

Applications for admission are accepted throughout the year.  However, beginning the application process early insures enrollment in the upcoming semester, before the registration cutoff date, and  allows for more opportunity to reserve courses of choice.
***  Note: See "How to Register".

WHAT IS THE ASSET TEST?
ASSET is used as an assessment of a student's basic skills in English, reading and math.  WSCC uses  ASSET scores, if ACT scores are inadequate or lacking,  to determine placement in English and math classes.  Our intent is to try and insure success in the classroom through accurate skill assessment and placement.  A schedule of ASSET testing dates can be seen on the Campus Schedule.

WHEN MAY I REGISTER?
Specific dates are listed on the Academic Calendar.  However, the following is a general guide:
Fall  -  Begins in April

HOW AND WHEN DO I APPLY FOR FINANCIAL AID?
Students may apply throughout the year for financial aid.  As always, the rule should be "the earlier the better" to allow for processing time.  Students may apply on-line at the FAFSA website www.fafsa.ed.gov or by completing the paper version which may be obtained at the Financial Aid office by calling extension 3115 or emailing a request to
 .
WHAT DOCUMENTATION MAY I HAVE TO SUBMIT TO THE FINANCIAL AID OFFICE?
A signed copy of  your  Federal Income Tax Return and/or verification of untaxed income.  In addition, you may be required to submit additional forms verifying your household size or number in college, or assets.  The Financial Aid Office will let you know what, if any documentation, is needed.

WHAT DO I DO IF I HAVE SPECIAL NEEDS?
The Support, Tutoring, and Resource Services (STaRS) office is the place to go for special assistance.  A counselor will meet with you and discuss your needs.  You may visit the STaRS web site for additional information or call extension 3513.

HOW DO I SELECT MY CLASSES?
All new students are required to submit ACT or ASSET scores to assist in correct course placement.  In addition, all new students (except HS dual enrollees) are required to meet with a counselor who will help you in selection of courses, create a semester schedule and register for courses for the upcoming semester.
We recommend all students visit with a counselor in the student services area each semester to insure proper course selection.

I'M NOT SURE OF MY COURSE OF STUDY BUT I STILL WANT TO TAKE CLASSES.  IS THIS POSSIBLE?
A student does not need to have a major when entering WSCC.   A student may take general education courses the first semester and work on career exploration activities during the semester.  Making an appointment with a counselor is highly advisable, (231) 845-6211,  ext. 3121
