West Shore Community College Alumni Association

Purpose

The West Shore Community College Alumni Association was founded in 1986 to promote the interests of the college, its alumni, and the communities WSCC serves.

Board of Directors

The Alumni Association is governed by an 18-member Board of Directors. Directors serve three-year terms, with six seats available each year. Alumni (persons who have completed 30 or more semester hours at WSCC or who have completed a WSCC degree or certificate) who would like to serve on the Board of Directors are encouraged to contact the WSCC Alumni Association Administrative Liaison to have their name placed for consideration.

Adopt A Highway

The WSCC Alumni Association participates in the Michigan Department of Transportation Adopt-A-Highway project. A stretch of highway is cleaned three times per year. It is two miles of U.S. 31 - south from the Manistee-Mason county line to Hoague Road.

Alumni Achievement Award

The Alumni Association annually honors a graduate or someone who has completed 45 or more semester hours who has made significant contributions to their communities through the pursuit of excellence, thereby encourraging future alumni to strive for success. The award will be presented at the college's Commencement on May 7, 2005. The awardee receives a plaque and their name is engraved on a master plaque located in the Liberal Arts and Sciences Center. Previous Alumni Achievement Award and Distinguished Alumni Speaker recipients.

Distinguished Alumni Speaker

The Distinguished Alumni Speaker is selected to deliver the keynote address at the college's annual Student Awards Program, to be held April 29, 2005. Selection of the speaker is based on outstanding achievements, interest and ability in delivering the keynote address.

The Alumni Association Scholarship Fund was established during the college's 25th anniversary celebration in 1992. It is an endowed fund, which means that the principal is a permanent investment and the interest is used for scholarships. Currently there is over $7,000 in the fund and one $250 scholarship is awarded to a WSCC sophomore each year.

The WSCC Alumni Association is associated with the West Shore Community College Foundation, which has provided financial support for alumni activities since 1986. Contributions are accepted for the operation of the Alumni Association and also the Alumni Association Scholarship Fund.

Michigan residents can obtain a 50 percent tax credit up to $100 for individuals and up to $200 for married couples filing jointly from their Michigan income tax each year.
