Police Academy


Applications for the 2018 Academy session will be mailed in the fall of 2017. If you would like to be included on the mailing list for the application materials, contact the Director at (231) 843-5831, or via email at dgdellar@westshore.edu.


Screening for the Academy will take place in November. The 2018 session will run January 15 - May 7.

The Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) has set physical, educational and character standards which must be met before a candidate can be admitted to any police licensure program.


Additionally, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Complete the first-year courses outlined in the college curriculum guide or hold at least an associate's degree from another college.

  • Submit a Program Application with accompanying documents.   Program Applications are mailed to students in early October.  To receive an application packet contact the Criminal Justice Department at (231) 843-5831 (Dan Dellar). 

  • Successfully pass a board interview.  Interviews will take place in November, and will be scheduled upon submission of the Program Application.

  • Pass the MCOLES Reading/Writing test and Physical Fitness test

  • Pass physical (including vision and hearing) examinations.  Details of the state physical standards are available at the MCOLES website.
