West Shore Community College, in partnership with Michigan Works! West Central, will be working with several local businesses to assist with workforce development utilizing dollars awarded from the Skilled Trades Training Fund (STTF).
Nearly $500,000 was awarded to businesses in the college district to train almost 400 employees. Three Mason County companies also received nearly $20,000 for eight employees who are working on completing U.S. Department of Labor approved apprenticeships through classes at WSCC.
USDOL apprenticeships combine work experience and on the job training, with educational requirements in the classroom.
“Our Open Entry, Open Exit training program is an ideal fit for STTF dollars,” stated Crystal Young, Director of the Business Opportunity Center. “We are appreciative of the effort that was put in to obtain these funds to give employees an opportunity to obtain new skills.”
Companies that received funding are UACJ Automotive, Whitehall Industries, CAM Sales, Fablite, Floracraft, Indian Summer Cooperative, Kaines West Michigan, Media Technologies, Metalworks, Michigan Freeze Pack, Occidental Chemical Corporation, Peacock Industries, Peterson Farms, and Valley City Metal Products, Inc.
