The West Shore Community College Performing Arts Series continues its 2017-2018 season with a concert on Thurs., Nov. 16, 7:30 p.m., at the Center Stage Theater featuring “The Filharmonic,” a vibrant acapella group who were finalists on the hit television show “The Sing Off.”
With Los Angeles as home base, “The Filharmonic” is a unique Filipino-American vocal group in both their musical talent and cultural diversity and they have much to sing about. Their melodic vocal style exemplifies an urbanesque hip hop sound with 90’s nostalgia.
They consist of five members; vocalists VJ Rosales, Joe Caigoy and Trace Gaynor, vocal bass Jules Cruz, and beat boxer Niko Del Rey.
What started as friendly chance encounters at singing competitions in college eventually solidified into a harmonious group as the boys discovered their shared genuine chemistry, unparalleled love of music, and undeniable musical talents.
Through social networks and a strong kinship to their Filipino culture, they found their niche in the musical community.
After making the semi-finals and finishing the first “Sing-Off” national tour, the group kicked-off their amazing journey sharing the stage with “Linkin Park,” “Black Eyed Peas,” and “Pentatonix.” They also had a part of the movie “Pitch Perfect 2.”
Though their passion for great music is on par, their combined talents come from a wide variety of backgrounds in the performing arts industry, including pop, a cappella, jazz, opera, theater, and classical. Together they honor their Filipino heritage through incredibly nuanced musical performances that are both moving and fun to experience.
Currently, the group can be found working hard on their music and videos, and doing what they love most - simply performing.
“Ultimately we aspire to work with the greatest in the music industry for the greatest audience in the world; you. To this end, we invite you to join us on this amazing journey we’ve embarked on as we work joyfully and tirelessly at our art,” said lead vocalist VJ Rosales.
Ted Malt, Director of Performing Arts and Professor of Music Studies said, “We are fortunate to be able to provide music clinics/workshops to our PK-12 area schools and community members. Students from surrounding schools will have the opportunity to work with ‘The Filharmonic’ up-close and personal in a one-hour clinic. Outreach to our surrounding communities and schools is a mission of the WSCC Performing Arts Series.”
