West Shore Community College is inviting area musicians to participate in its performing music ensembles.

The music department will be holding an orientation for all Wind Symphony members on Wed., August 30, from 6 to 8 p.m., in WSCC’s Center Stage Theater.  Members are not required to bring their instruments, however it is very important for all members to be in attendance.  WSCC scholarship students will also have a brief meeting following the orientation.

In past years, the WSCC Wind Symphony has grown considerably and this year’s membership is expected to be around 100 members.  The group is comprised of WSCC students, community members, and high school students from many area high schools.

The symphony will be performing both traditional and contemporary works during a holiday concert scheduled for December 13.

The first rehearsal will be held on Sept. 6, and will meet thereafter on Wednesdays from 6:45 to 8:30 p.m.in the Arts and Sciences Center, room 331.

The WSCC Percussion Ensemble is back for a second year.  The percussion ensemble is open to percussionist who are able to read and perform rudimentary percussion and mallet skills.   The Percussion Ensemble will rehearse directly after Wind Symphony rehearsals beginning at 8:30 p.m.  The first rehearsal will be on Wed., Sept. 6.

The WSCC Jazz Ensemble will be off and running on Sept. 7, with complete instrumentation and a strong group of musicians. The group will practice on Thursday nights from 7:15-8:30 p.m.

Musicians only enrolled in the jazz ensemble will not be required to attend the orientation held on Sept. 6. Musicians may join this group upon director appointment or audition.

The WSCC Community Choir will continue its tradition of bringing the community outstanding choral performances under the direction of Becky Sopha.

“We are very fortunate to have such a talented director in Becky who brings years of experience and musical talent, which results in high level performances year after year,” says Malt.

There are no auditions for the choir and anyone with previous vocal experience are welcome. The choir rehearses on Tuesday nights, at 7 p.m., in the vocal studio of the Arts and Sciences Center, room 327.

The first choir rehearsal is Tues., Sept. 12, and those interested in joining the Community Choir are asked to contact Becky Sopha at bsophachoirs@yahoo.com or come to the first rehearsal.
